Bastille

Rock, Indie, Pop
Bastille, the British indie-pop band from London, was nominated for the 2015 Best New Artist Grammy. Their album "Bad Blood" entered the U.K. albums chart at No.1 and held a spot in the top 20 for several weeks. The U.S. version of the album, featuring the smash alternative single, "Pompeii," arrived in 2013. In 2014 Jon Caramanica of The New York Times called them "a relatively toothless, relatively harmless band that takes 1980s New Romantic impulses and softens them up considerably until they resemble the overblown British soft arena-rock of the 2000s." He called their tunes "catchy," however, and described its front man, Dan Smith, as "a singer with character in his voice." Their new album, "Wild World," debuted in September 2016.

PJ Harvey

Rock, Pop
PJ Harvey is a groundbreaking songwriter and a critical favorite. Through five albums and side projects with Tricky and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, to name a few, Harvey has distanced herself from many of the other artists that came to prominence in the early '90s. Harvey's latest is a new collaboration with John Parish, 'A Woman A Man Walked By.'

The Los Angeles indie-rock band has a third album out, "Home of the Strange." RS praised the 2016 album's "new-wave sheen ... replete with nifty electronic sound effects."

Rancid

Punk, Ska
One of the cornerstone bands of the '90s punk revival, Rancid's sound echoed the Clash's fascination with ska, while adding a bit of post-hardcore crunch. Over time, the band leaned more on the ska-punk side, finally shedding that mix in favor of a more hardcore presence.
