Intervention for Arranged Marriages and Female Genital Mutilation
“Voices of Hope” (a non-profit organization that assists young Maasai women in Kenya to escape arranged marriages and genital mutilation) will be hosting an Information Session/Fundraiser on Sunday, May 18th at Columbia Basin College. The FREE event open to the public will be held between (2-4pm) downstairs in the Hawk Union Building.
“Voices of Hope” Founder, Rachael Tengbom (of the Maasai Tribe) will speak about her Maasai people and share how the “Voices of Hope” Project has rescued and educated young Maasai women and provided them with the opportunity to become Servant Leaders in their Maasai Village.
The event will include: a Spare Change Collection (participants are encouraged to bring their containers of spare change to donate to the project), a Maasai Market of African items, and the collection of pencils for children of the Maasai Tribe.
Anyone wishing to Sponsor a young Maasai woman in the Project may do so for a cost of $100 per month or $1,200 per year. Current sponsors consist of clubs, churches, individuals and groups of friends. The Sponsorship pays for education, food and lodging. Other donations may be made for Emergency Funding, the drilling of a borehole (water for the entire village) and the construction of a Safe Home for girls and young women who are attempting to escape arranged marriages and genital mutilation and have no safe place to go.
